Suspension Bridges

A suspension bridge is a type of bridge that is hung by suspension cables. When the bridges were first made they were not that stable and some times they collapsed. The inventor of the suspension bridge is James Finely. These bridges let us reach distant lands and made it way easier to travel. One of the most famous suspension bridges is the Golden Gate Bridge located in San Francisco California.

The Fire Hydrant

A fire hydrant is a connection point so fire fighters have a water supply. The inventor is Fredrick Graff. This invention had a big impact because of how it saved peoples homes or business and other buildings. Other people saw Graff’s invention and built more and that’s why we still have them today. The new designs work better and are very useful.

The Locomotive

The locomotives are vehicles that run on rails or tracks and are powered by steam. Locomotives are very important because they led to todays trains. The inventor of the locomotive is George Stephenson. The locomotive was a big step in history and are very important.

The thing I liked most out of everything I learned was the suspension bridge because of how they are made is way different from a normal bridge and that interested me.

This summer I didn’t go on vacation so I stayed home but I also worked on gymnastics. I am a gymnast so I need lots of training. I train three days a week but in the summer I didn’t train as much so I worked on my skills at home. When I am scared of doing a skill I work on it at home so when I go to the gym I’m not that scared. Since I have to be really strong I also work out at home. I had a lot of fun this summer but I still wished I went on vacation.

Morphine

Morphine is a drug that could cure severe pain. The problem with morphine is that it was very addictive. Morphine was very helpful when it was invented because there was no other medicine like this. Morphine was still very helpful when someone was hurt. When morphine was used on someone it was a very high risk for that person to get addicted to it. You could have only shot of morphine so you didn’t get addicted. Later morphine led to more medicine.

Jacquard Loom

The Jacquard loom is a attachment that you can put on powered fabric looms. This was very helpful because it could help weave the cloth faster. This loom led to cloth factories. It could also make cool and interesting patterns. This was a breakthrough in looms because it did not only make patterns but it took less work. The Jacquard loom is still used today and was a labor saving invention.

The Smallpox Vaccine

The smallpox vaccine is a vaccine people took to protect themselves from smallpox. Smallpox was a very serious disease. When this vaccine was invented places started to required it. This also caught on and started other vaccines. This was very helpful because the smallpox disease spread very easily. Smallpox was so dangerous that when you were diagnosis you had to have emergency care. Now it is very rare to get smallpox and there has not been a case in a long time.

The Voltaic Pile

The voltaic pile was the first battery that delivery electric current. This was very helpful because it led to lighting, phones, computers and other things. It also gave constant power which is very important for today’s technology. The voltaic pile is named after its inventor Alessandro Volta. This is a very important invention in history and helped with a lot of things. This was a great invention but inventors needed a longer lasting power source. The battery still remains a standard design today.

The Arc Light

The arc light is a lamp that produces lots of light by an electric arc. The difference with this lamp is that it was very bright. It was brighter than gas lighting so it started to light up streets and buildings. Other people started to make lamps because of how well it did. Later around the 1800s the arc light was a great invention but it was replaced by the carbon arc lamp.

Dalton’s Atomic Theory

Dalton’s theory is a theory that all matter is made of atoms. Dalton’s theory says atoms of an element are the same in all ways and were unable to be separated. Dalton was a great man and loved learning and teaching. Over time his theory has been corrected such as atoms aren’t inseparable. Dalton was also the first person to explain the behavior atoms.

The thing that I enjoyed learning about the most was the arc light. The reason is because in my past lessons I learned about gas lighting and arc lights replaced that and I like how the more I learn the more I know about history.

Semaphore Telegraph

The semaphore telegraph is a type of telegraph that delivers messages. With this invention the messages would be turned into symbols. This invention was very helpful and allowed for better communication. This was a major breakthrough in technology. This invention was very helpful because of how easy it made sending messages. This telegraph was very simple but very powerful. Soon the semaphore was replaced by the electric telegraph.

The Cotton Gin

The cotton gin separates seeds from fiber. It was invented by Eli Whitney in 1794. The cotton gin lowered the price of cotton because it was not as hard to make. Before the cotton gin it took hours to take the seeds out of the fiber but with the cotton gin it took way less time. The cotton gin increased the speed and quality of the cotton. This was a major breakthrough in history. The cotton gin was easy to use and did not need a lot of skill. Cotton gins are still sometimes used today but have been improved a lot over the years.

Eli Whitney

Eli Whitney was an inventor most famous for inventing the cotton gin. Whitney’s invention opened many factories and he became very successful. He was also known all around because of his invention. Whitney’s invention was one of the key inventions in the Industrial Revolution. Later after his 59th birthday in 1825 he died of prostate cancer. Whitney’s invention had a big impact on history and is still known today.

The Hydraulic Press

The hydraulic press is a machine that is used to press hard objects. This press turned soybeans into food crop. These presses are also used at a car compactor site to crush up the cars. The hydraulic press is used to make metal into cool shapes as well. Hydraulic presses are still used today and are very popular. Hydraulic presses are used in many different ways such as in crop production, garbage trucks, cars and many other sites.

The thing I liked learning about this week was the cotton gin. I liked this because of how simple it is and how much it helped people. I also liked that it transformed so many things.

The Steamboat

The steamboat is boat powered by steam. The steamboat increased travel speed and made it easier to move cargo. The steamboat was a very popular invention and led to the ship industry. They could also travel upstream unlike other boats. They were invented by Robert Fulton in 1807. The famous RMS Titanic was actually a steamship as well. The steamboat was replaced in the 20th century mainly by railroad travel.

Robert Fulton

Robert Fulton was an engineer and inventor born in 1765. Fulton was most famous for inventing the first working steamboat. He was very successful because of steamboats. His steamboats spread all through America. He made a good amount of money from steamboats. Fulton made it so we have modern day transportation. Robert Fulton died in 1815 from tuberculosis trying to save his friend.

The Argand Lamp

The Argand lamp is a type of oil lamp. This lamp was a lot brighter than using a candle to light a room. Argand lamps were affordable to many people. Many different inventors were also very interested in it. The Argand lamp could be used with different types oil such as seal oil, whale oil, olive, and other types of oil. Later in 1816 they were replaced by normal lamps.

The Power Loom

The power loom is a type of loom that weaves fabric using steam engines. Power looms were very helpful because it increased the quality of fabric. The power loom did not need skilled workers and did not need a lot of skill. This loom also helped with clothes, blankets, pillows and other things. The power loom was a key development in the weaving industry and will still be remembered today.

The thing I liked the most this week was steamboats. I liked them because of how successful they were and how one of the most well known ships was a steamboat.
