Wind is air in motion. Wind forms when land is more heated than the water next to it, so it expands and rises over to the cool air. Wind also forms along mountain valleys where cool air from the top of the mountain moves down and ends up making what we call “catabatic winds” which can make strong winds and steady winds. To find out if its going to be windy we use barometers which help us figure out the weather by measuring the air pressure in any environment.
Octavian Augustus Caesar
Octavian is known for being one the most effective roman leaders. Octavian’s reign lasted from 27 BC up until he died in 14 AD. During his reign was a time of peace and one of the ways that is proven is because the Temple of Janus which had been built years before his reign had the doors closed which meant Rome was at peace but if they were open it meant they were at war. During his ruling over Rome he built many temples, palaces, and many more types of buildings along with also encouraging cultural developments. One of the main things that he was considered the most effective leader of Rome and why when he died he was declared a roman god when he died is because he never once abused his power and used it to hurt people.
Stranded on a Island
This week I started reading a book called Swiss Family Robinson and in the book they shipwreck and get stranded on island and they have to use the materials that are on the island to survive. So today I’m going to be talking about what materials I would use to survive.
The first thing I would look for is any form of fabric so I could use it for comfort and to heal wounds. Then I would look for fruit growing on trees or bushes along with an item that I could use as a weapon to kill fish and other small animals. The third most important thing that I would try to obtain is wood that is dry so I can use it for a fire or shelter and fire materials. With all these items I could hopefully survive on the island until I have the materials to either build a raft to get to saftety or someone could hopefully rescue me.
The Founding of Carthage
Carthage was founded in 814 BC and is located on the coast of North Africa. The kingdom was founded by the Phoenician queen Elissa also known as Dido. When her brother became king she fled to start a new kingdom. She got the land by talking the people of North Africa into giving her a really big tract of land. With the land she then began to build the Kingdom of Carthage. Carthage was a big trading city and was widely known for it. Despite it being a strong trading city, it was always at war with other cultures. It was mainly at war with the Greeks, Sicilians, and eventually went to war with the Romans.
New York
New York is a pretty cool place and a lot of people live there and speaking of living if I could I would live in New York heres why.
New York is known for many things such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and many other things. The reasons why I would love to live in New York is because a lot of family lives there so it would be really nice to get to see them more often. The second reason I wouldn’t mind living in New York is because it is pretty hard to find a house there so I would most likely live in an apartment which I wouldn’t mind because I find them pretty cool. The third and final reason is about how many events go on in New York and it would be amazing to see them live, a few of these events are the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, the Times Square Countdown, and the St. Patricks Day Parade.
Passepartout
Recently I finished a book called Around the World in 80 Days which I have talked about talked about in the past but today I’m not going to be talking about the story line instead I’m going to be talking about one of the characters.
The character I’m going to be talking about is Passepartout, which you may be wondering why well because he is my favorite character. In the story he is the valet of the main person in the story named Mr.Fogg. A few reasons on why I like Passepartout are because of how sometimes in the story he can be clueless which makes him pretty funny and I also like how he is very nice and friendly to everyone he meets. In the story he stays extremely loyal to Mr.Fogg even when Mr.Fogg was arrested for a crime that the cops thought he did when he didn’t and still he didn’t leave instead he stayed and helped him prove the cops that he didn’t do it.
The Samnite Wars
There were total of 3 Samnite wars which lasted all lasted 60 years. The first war began when the Samnites were expanded their land into Roman territory which caused a war between them even though they used to be allies. This war didn’t go the best for either side but in the end the Samnites asked for peace so they organized a peace treaty. The second war started when Rome broke the peace treaty which started the next war. This war lasted lasted 5 years until the Samnites wanted peace which the Romans refused to accept and they also suffered a horrible loss. The third war was basically just where Rome finally just destroyed the Samnites.
Greek Mythology
Greek mythology is widely known through greek myths which used to be told be the ancient greeks. Greek myths are very fun stories to read and a great way to learn about Greek mythology. Another way people read Greek myths is to better understand the nature of myth-making itself. These stories are normally about Greek gods and heroic battles. This was also a great way to see into the ancient greek life style. A few famous greek myths are Theseus and Minotaur, Perseus and Medusa, and my personal favorite The Labors of Heracles. The Labors of Heracles is my favorite and a very interesting story where a man has to kill a nine headed serpent to complete one of the 12 tasks to become immortal.
The Roman Games
Despite that the romans did copy some of the greek religion the roman games were completely different than the greek olympics. For example the greek olympics were meant to worship men but the roman games were made for entertainment and a distraction from peoples real lives. There were two times that the games were normally held, morning and afternoon. The morning games were what they called ”hunts”. This is where they would put criminals in the arena with dangerous animals to be devoured or gladiators would fight these animals. The afternoon games were where gladiators would fight each other to the death.(gladiators are men who fought against each other for the crowd’s entertainment) They were the main focus of the games and they were normally slaves or criminals. There was one way that you could live if you didn’t beat your opponent which was if the emperor showed mercy to the man.
Alexander the Great
Alexander the Great was a king of Macedon and was born in 356. Alexander was taught to read and write at a young age. This caused him to be very smart and fall in love with reading and music. He became the king of Macedon at the age of 20 in 303 BC. Alexander was a very successful man and was known as the best general during his time. He accomplished so much during his time as one of those things being that he solved the Gordian knot which was the hardest knot to untie at the time but if you undid it you would become the king of Asia and Alexander cut it in half with his sword technically undoing it. He had never lost a war and conquered all empires in the world during that time. He also built cities in Alexandria and gave himself the name Alexander the Great because of his accomplishments. After his death of unknown reasons his empire slowly declined because he didn’t plan ahead.
