The jackhammer is an electro-mechanical tool that digs into the ground with a chisel. The jackhammer was invented in 1849. The jackhammer is such an important invention because it made mining and construction work easier and faster. Before this invention workers had to use mallets and pickaxes to mine which was very time consuming. Englishman William Mcreavy was the inventor of the jackhammer.

Pin Tumbler Lock

The pin tumbler lock is a mechanism inside a lock using pins to keep it closed. Each pin has two parts these pins have different lengths that keep the lock from being opened without the right key. This lock became very important because it was able to stop robbers from breaking into banks, homes and businesses. Linus Yale invented this in 1861 and perfected it later to make the double lock. People bought it right away and it was spread around the world as a way to protect their stuff. It is now a common used lock especially in door locks.

Safety Pin

The safety pin is a pin with includes a simple spring mechanism and a clasp. The clasp can also be referred to as the little loop on top. This is an important invention because it was marketed towards nurses to help hold bandages and gowns in place. The safety pin was invented by Walter Hunt. He came up with this idea while trying to find something he could sell to pay off a debt. Walter only made $400 selling this invention while the company he sold it to made a fortune. They became so common that were used in fashion especially in punk rock trend.

Gyroscopes

The gyroscope is a device that measures somethings position and how fast it moves around another object. It has a spinning wheel with a center free moving axis. Leon Faucault invented this in 1852 because he was experimenting with the rotation of the Earth. This invention helped lead to the discovery of the speed of light. The gyroscope became popular because it can be used in many forms including inside electronics and telescopes. In fact it is even used in the Hubble telescope at NASA which helped send men to the moon.

John Scott Haldane invented the first gas mask during WWI in 1914. John was a Scottish physician born in 1860 and died in 1936.

Antiseptics

Antiseptics is a substance that slows down the the growth of microorganisms. This works by being applied to the skin before any surgery to protect you from a bacteria that may be on your skin. Ignaz Semmelweis was a physician and scientist born in 1818 and invented antiseptics in 1847, 18 years before he died.

The Rotary Printing Press

The rotary printing press is a machine that prints on paper and pushes the piece of paper through a supporting cylinder. A very interesting fact about this machine is that in can print 7 million pages in a hour. The inventor is Richard Hoe and he was an inventor and born in 1812. Richard and lived in a manor with his family.

Kerosene

Kerosene is a type of lamp/coal oil used for lamps, heaters, furnaces and a couple of things. Kerosene was not only used in the 1700s but still commonly used today. Abraham Gesner was born in 1797 and invented kerosene at the age 49. Abraham got really famous from his invention.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Ether and other Inventions

Ether

Ether was a surgical anesthetic used in 1842. A bad side is if you take too much you can die. Ether can work by being vaporized into gas and makes the person numb but leaves them conscious. The inventor is Crawford Long who was an American surgeon born in 1815.

Fax Machine

The fax machine is a device used to send documents over a telephone. Alexander Bain was a Scottish philosopher born in 1818 and invented the fax machine in 1843. The fax machine works by only scanning one line at a time and then when its done scanning it sends the document out.

Steam Powered Iron Passenger Ships

The steam powered iron passenger ship is a steam powered boat used to transport people across the ocean. Isambard Bruel was very interested in this subject which is why he invented this. In addition to this information Bruels ship outperformed all the others ships.

The Ice Cream Maker

The ice cream maker is a simple machine used to make small amounts of ice cream. Nancy Johnson is known for making the first ever wooden ice cream making machine. Similar to the other inventions this was invented in 1843. Without Nancy we would not have all the types of ice cream flavors or types we have today.

My Dream Job

My dream job is to be an airline pilot. I want to be an airline pilot because I find planes very interesting and have loved them since I was 3. Another thing would be there is not too many girl pilots so that would be pretty interesting. The next thing would be that I could explore the world . I would try new food or new styles of clothing. I could also save lots of money on traveling.

The Stapler and other Inventions

The Stapler

The stapler is a device used to bind two or more sheets of paper together. The stapler works by using force to push a staple through a piece of paper to secure the pages together. Samuel Solcum was a American inventor and was interested in pushing pins through paper which led to him inventing the stapler.

The Grain Elevator

The grain elevator is a machine used to lift grain and up into a silo. A silo is a tower on a farm used to store grain. This is very important because it used to take 8 hours to move the grain but now it only takes 1. The inventor is Joseph Dart who was an American inventor.

Blueprints

Blueprints are drawings that are for an architectural project. Now blueprints have black and grey lines with a white background. the. inventor is John Herschel was an English polymath who died in 1871.

The Electric Clock

The electric clock is a clock powered by electricity. The pendulum of the clock turns the clock’s gear which causes the clock to move. The inventor is Alexzander Bain and he was a Scottish philosopher.

The Steel Plow and other Inventions

The Steel Plow

The steel plow is a type of plow used to break up hard soil. This was also a labor saving invention. The steel plow uses oxen to pull it through the field. If you do not know what an oxen it is a castrated bull. The inventor is John Deere born in 1804. He is an American blacksmith and died in 1886.

Steam Shovel

The steam shovel is an excavator that is powered by steam. The steam shovel works by two arcs digging in the ground. William Smith Otis is the inventor and he didn’t live to see how far his invention came. Otis invented it in 1835.

The Postage Stamp

The postage stamp is a piece of paper with adhesive on the back used to mail letters and packages. The postage stamp was introduced to the US in 1847. Rowland Hill was a English teacher and invented the postage stamp in 1847.

Vulcanized Rubber

Vulcanized rubber is a type of rubber that uses a harding method to become the right type of rubber. This rubber uses a chemical heating method to harden. Charles Goodyear was the inventor and was also an American chemist.

My Best Birthday Present

I’ve only had ten birthdays to choose from but the best birthday came last. On my tenth birthday my dad surprised me with my own MacBook. My MacBook was the best present because I can use it for my school work, gaming, and TV. Before I got this present it was harder to do these things but now everything moves a lot faster and easier. I also think it is pretty cool that I am 10 year old with my own computer.

The Combine Harvester

The combine harvester is a machine used to harvest all sorts of crops. The combine harvester was invented in 1843 by Hiram Moore. This invention works by cutting the crops from the field then they go to a center conveyer belt. After this they are broken up and the grain is separated from the husks. This invention helped because it reduced the work of the labors.
