I love cooking. I like cooking because its like arts and crafts you can mix ingredients together and end up with a beautiful dish. Last week I made a smoothie and it was really fun because I got to be free and add different ingredients. With cooking you don’t have to be very exact but with baking you do otherwise it might not taste right and taste too salty or too sweet so you have to be very careful. Something else about cooking is you can hurt yourself in many ways such as burning your hand. I love cooking and will continue to cook.

The microphone is a invention that is used in many other inventions and it also can improve other inventions.
The Typewriter
The typewriter is a machine used for typing. The typewriter was an invention that we used to type things like books before computers and printers. Something interesting about the typewriter is they can be modified in a way blind people can use them. Today we usually display them for decoration.
The Braille Writing System
The braille writing system is a system used by people who are blind. Louis Braille the inventor invented this invention at the age of 15 which is really young for such a great invention. Louis became blind at the age of 3 but didn’t realize he was blind. When Louis got older he realized and he wanted to help other people.
The Sewing Machine
The sewing machine is a machine used to stitch fabric together. The sewing machine is a very interesting invention and is commonly used today. With the sewing machine it is a lot easier and faster to make clothes. Before the sewing machine it could take hours take make clothes. The sewing machine is now a simple invention but it had a long history.
Something I Love about my Neighborhood
Something about my neighborhood that I like is that my brother and I have this really good friend that we hang out with all the time. The next thing is our neighbors. Our neighbors are very nice and last year when we had a house fire they let us in their house until we had to leave. The last thing is that our house is at the top of the coldestsack and its really cool.
Matches and other Inventions
Portland Cement
Portland cement is the most commonly used cement all around the world. The inventor of Portland cement is William Aspdin. He accidentally produced the main ingredient in Portland cement which led to this invention. Soon after it began being used all over. Portland cement replaced roman cement. Portland cement is used to make almost all concrete. Portland cement is a very important invention to history and is still used today.
Electromagnets
Electromagnets are a type of magnet that are produced by electrical currents. Electromagnets are only magnetic when electric current is flowing through a magnetic field. If you want you can search how to make them. They are very simple and easy to make. Electromagnets are used in speakers, motors, and many other things. This invention was very helpful in advancing sound production and other technologies.
The Passenger Rail
The passenger rail is a long distance train that goes between many cities. Passenger rails often have tiny restaurants or dining rooms these are called dining cars. Normally the chairs turn into beds at night and in the day they are normal chairs. This invention was very useful if you needed to get to a different city in a couple days instead of weeks. A modern day form of the passenger rail is the subway. The subway is only used for quick transportation so it does not have dining cars. We still use this invention in many different ways.
Matches
Matches are small wooden tools used to make fire. Today matches aren’t that valuable but they used to be very important. People didn’t have electricity or heaters so they used fire for everything and this was an easy way to start it. Today we use matches for campfires, fireplaces and lots of other things.
This week I liked learning about the passenger rail. I think it is interesting how you can have a normal day on a train.
The Pencil and other Inventions
The Pencil
The pencil is a graphite writing tool encased with wood. Before the pencil was invented people used quills and ink. Pencils are great for artists because if you mess up you can erase the mistake. Pencils have been around for a long time. Now we have the modern day invention which includes mechanical pencils. The inventor of the pencil was Henrey David. Today we have colored pencils, lead pencils and other types.
The Stethoscope
The stethoscope is a medical instrument used to hear someone’s heart beat or other organs such as the lungs and stomach. The inventor of the stethoscope was Rene Lannnec. He did this by rolling up paper and putting it up to the chest. Rene got this idea from a couple of kids playing with rolled up paper and string. Just by using the stethoscope he could figure out what was wrong with someone. Sadly Rene died in 1826.
The Tunneling Shield
The tunneling shield is a protective structure used during an evacuation of a large man made tunnel so rocks and boulders don’t crush the workers. The inventor is Marc Brunel. Sometimes water or other liquids would flood the tunnel so this invention would save lives. Sometimes we still use the tunneling shield today.
Paved Roads
Paved roads are paved surfaces for cars or other things to drive on. The inventor of the paved road was John McAdam and his invention spread throughout the world. Paved roads were made for traffic wheels. Paved roads are something we just drive on everyday but they have a such a big history. John’s design is still used today and are being built all the time.
The thing I enjoyed most this week was the pencil I found it interesting how an everyday object had such a long history.
Gymnastics
My favorite thing to do is gymnastics. Gymnastics is a sport that requires things like balance, strength, flexibility, agility and endurance. I love gymnastics because I have been doing it for six years and it is really fun. I am a level 3 which means I don’t need too many skills. When I do get a skill it’s really exciting. Gymnastics can be really scary so sometimes I get mental blocks. I have mental blocks on a skill called a back walkover and I have to do it on a beam. A beam is a tall thing that is 2 inches wide and I have to bend backwards and stand back up which is really scary. I will always love gymnastics and never give up.

The Vapor Compression Theory
The vapor compression theory is when liquid circulates and takes the hot air from the space so the room can be cooler. This theory was used in refrigerators but the first fridge that was used for homes was in 1913. Another example is AC units it pulls the hot air out and it blows cool air in. This theory is amazing and the founder is Oliver Evans. His theory changed the world because now we have AC, refrigerators and many other things if only he could see how far it came.
The Percussion Ignition
The percussion ignition was a system where the percussion cap has flammable mercury inside and when you shoot it a flame comes out. This allowed guns to shoot in the rain and fire faster. The inventor of this is John Forsyth. He had a big impact on history just look at modern day guns. John loved hunting which led him to make the percussion ignition.
The Canning Process
The canning process is a method of preserving food in cans or jars. This was very helpful because they needed to feed soldiers and this came in handy. We still use the canning process today to preserve vegetables and other foods. Armies were very large and this process became very popular to feeding them. People only started to use this to store their own food later on. Today we use the canning process to give gifts or to store food.
Oliver Evans
Oliver Evans was an American inventor born in 1755. Evans was a gifted reader and writer and he also was the founder of the vapor compression theory. He was very smart and thought ahead of his time. Without him we would not have AC or fridges. He had a very big impact on history and he wanted to create and build.
Interesting Inventions
