Interesting Inventors and Inventions

Robert Boyle

Robert Boyle was a philosopher, chemist, physicist, and inventor born in 1627. Boyle had a big impact on history. Boyle is best known as a natural philosopher and not many people were. He made many contributions to science, one of them was he moved chemistry away from alchemy. Alchemy is an old practice shrouded in mystery and secrecy. He learned a lot from studding Galileo’s work. Boyle died of a stroke at 64 in 1691.

The Vacuum Pump

The vacuum pump is a type of vacuum that removes gas molecules from a sealed volume in order to leave behind a partial vacuum that was first invented in 1650. The vacuum pump was inspired by Boyle, who became the father of chemistry. The vacuum pump started from the suction pump. The suction is a pump for liquid to go through a pipe into a chamber. Today we use vacuum pump in air conditioning.

Mercury Barometer

The mercury barometer is a simple device to measure atmospheric pressure. The barometer can also predict the weather. The inventor of the barometer is Torricelli, he invented this in 1643. Torricelli originally invented the barometer help miners suck out water out of mines and now we use it in measuring weather patterns. The mercury barometer led to many other breakthroughs in the future

The Pendulum Clock

The pendulum clock is a clock that uses a swinging weight as its time keeping. The pendulum clock was one of the best clocks ever invented. The pendulum clock became the universal time-keeping standard. Galileo had the idea for it but Huygens invented it. They began being replaced by the 1940s. Some people still by the pendulum clock for their decorative beauty. You might know someone that owns a pendulum clock.

My favorite thing I learned this week was the vacuum pump. The vacuum pump is really fascinating because it is just a vacuum and can do so much. Some people may thing we don’t use vacuum pumps now but we still use them in air conditioning.

My Favorite Thing About my Family

I have an amazing family with my dad, mom, brother and a dog. I like different things about different people in my family. My favorite thing about my dad is how determined and hard working he is. He also can make a joke out of anything. My favorite thing about my mom is she is very smart and nice. My mom can also cook and bake. Her food is AMAZING. My favorite thing about my brother is he can always make me happy. I can be sick laying in bed and he can still make me laugh. Last but not least my dog. I have a cute dog named Sherwood he is so cute and funny. When my brother or I is sick he will sit next to us for at least half the day.

1 Inventor 3 Inventions part 2

Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal was born in 1623 in France. Pascal was a mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and catholic theologian. He is also best known for the mechanical calculator. He invented this to help his father. His father handled a lot of adding and subtraction, so that is what he made the mechanical calculator. Just 2 months after his 39th birthday he died of stomach cancer. Pascal died as important contributor to science.

The Mechanical Calculator

The mechanical calculator is a mechanical device used to perform the basic operations of arithmetic automatically. The mechanical calculator is great but it could not multiple and divide. None of the attempted devices of the calculator were successful for over 200 years. The mechanical calculator led to many great inventions in the future. The mechanical calculator soon was replaced by the calculator in 1851

Mersenne’s Laws

Mersenne’s laws are laws describing the frequency of oscillation of a stretched string or monochord. Inventions appeared in the 20th century that used Mersenne’s laws. Telephones, speakers and such benefit from Mersenne’s laws. The inventor of Mersennes laws is Marin Mersennes. Mersenne is a French mathematician and music theorist.

Cartesain Coordinates

A Cartesain coordinate system is a coordinate system hat specifies each point uniquely in a plane by a set of numeral coordinates. There are multiple other coordinates systems now. The inventor of this is Rene Descartes, a French philosopher, mathematician and scientist. The Cartesain coordinates had a really big impact on history and helped with other inventions.

What I found most interesting was learning about the life of Blaise Pascal. It is fascinating to me how he worked so hard to help his father and he was successful. Also how he got so much done and achieved so much in such a short life span.

Crocodiles

Crocodiles are very dangerous animals and have been around for a very a long time. True crocodiles are the largest and most aggressive crocodiles. They also have the most strongest bite in the world. Crocodiles usually use stealth to hunt prey. When babies are born they use their jaws to protect babies.

The King Snake

The king snake is a beginner pet snake. They are shy beautiful creatures. If you are going to have a king snake as a pet they need the right environment. You need to have the right temperatures in the tank and have some hiding spots. King snakes eat rodents and other snakes. King snakes are venomous so you have to be careful when you handle a king snake. If you get bit by a snake you want to stay calm. First put the snake back in your tank, then you want to disinfect the wound and call your doctor and let them handle it.

The Slide Rule

The slide rule is a mechanical analog computer used to multiply and divide. It was invented in 1622. It also became popular very fast. After it was invented the slide rule was constantly being improved. It also helped sailors at sea. Slide rules became integral to engineering. Soon they got replaced by calculators in 1974. Slide rules made it easy to divide and multiply.

John Napier

John Napier was born in 1550. He was a mathematician, physicist, and astronomer. He is best known as the discoverer of logarithms. Logarithms are a mathematical operation that determine how many times a certain number is multiplied to reach another number. His work of logarithms lead to the making of the slide rule.

Galileo Galilei

Galileo was born in 1564. He was an astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher and mathematician. He was not planing on being a scientist. Galileo accomplished a lot such as constructing the telescope and supported the Copernican theory, which is the sun-centered solar system. He played a major role in the scientific revolution.

Johannes Kepler

Johannes Kepler was born in 1571. He was a astronomer, mathematician, and astrologer. He is best known for the laws of planetary motion. He was also important to the development of science. He also wrote a couple of books. He soon worked with Tycho Brahe but after working with him for a year he pasted away.

I found the slide rule the most fascinating. I like the slide rule because of that was their calculator. That is what they had and that’s the only thing they had since they didn’t have all the technology we have today.

Snake Bite

If one of my family members got bit by a snake I would be really scared. If you don’t treat a snake bite properly it can cause death. The first thing I would do is tell them to wrap it up and they need to go to the hospital now. As soon as we got here I would tell them they need treatment fast. So many people die from snake bites and I can’t have one of my family members gone.

My Talent

My talent is arts and crafts. Ever since I was little I was very creative and I was pretty good at it. Now that I am older I am better at drawing and am very creative. I can use my creativity to make gifts for my friends and family. I can also draw pictures and hang them up in a room to decorate. I can make useful items as well such as a cardboard shelf or mini coin purse. If there are some food containers that I can wash out and use for a craft I take them.

The Copperhead Snake

Copperheads are pit vipers. They can be found in the US. Copperheads can live up to 18 years. Copperheads are venomous,if they inject enough venom it can kill you. There are 5 different copperhead species. Male copperheads can reach up to 3 feet long.

One inventor and three inventions

The telescope

The first telescope appeared in 1608. Telescopes magnify objects far away. The telescope was the result of a successive development of optical theories and inventions. The telescope also helped overturn the Ptolomaic model of the universe. Johannes Kepler improved it further in 1611. The telescope is symbolic of the advancement of science. The telescope has had a big impact on history and we still use them today.

William Gilbert

William Gilbert was born in 1544. William was a physician, physicist and natural philosopher. He liked to study magnetism, he discovered so much. His work inspired people. He proposed that space was a vacuum because there is nothing in space. This theory contradicted Aristole’s theory. Gilbert initiated the science of electromagnetism. He also wrote a book on magnets and magnetic bodies.

The Newspaper

The newspaper was invented in 1690. It was very popular. Newspapers were an easy way to spread information fast. Newspapers were published a lot, at least every week. You could get in a lot of trouble if you got caught copying someone else’s work. The internet took down newspapers and made them really cheap.

The compound microscope

The compound microscope was invented in the 1600s. Galileo is responsible for its creation. Before the microscope scientist would refute bad theories of particles. The Dutch applied their creativity to lens making to the compound microscope. Louis Pasteur used the microscope to refute the theory that “bad air” made people sick. His use of the microscope confirmed this by looking at the germ particles.

Out of all of the things I learned this week the most interesting to me was the newspaper. The newspaper was something I didn’t think about since it seems like just a paper with stories on it. I liked how much work and thought went into the creation of it and find that amazing.
