Parrots

There are 372 parrot species. My favorite parrot is the Scarlet Macaw. They are very pretty birds. Scarlet’s have rainbow feathers and white beaks. They live in the tropics of South America. Parrots are different from other birds, because they can mimic words and noises. Cockatoos are bigger parrots. They can live 70-80 years in captivity. They are also known for their fancy feathers.

Hummingbirds

The smallest bird in the world is the Bee hummingbird. Its lighter than a penny. Hummingbirds are most gifted for their flight technique. They can flap their wings 80 times a second. Hummingbirds need lots of energy to survive. So if you think of getting a hummingbird feeder get at least two. Some types of hummingbirds are The Ruby Throated, The Anna’s hummingbird, The Green Voiletear, and may others. My favorite hummingbird is The Ruby Throated.

Penguins

Penguins are water, flightless birds. They don’t have wings they have flippers. There are 18-20 species of penguins. Penguins can swim 15 miles per hour. Emperor penguins are the largest penguins. Adults can weigh as much as 100 pounds. The fairy penguin is the smallest penguin. They can reach up to 13 inches. King penguins travel in really big packs. There can be a half-million birds in each pack. You can find penguins in the southern hemisphere.

Inventions of the World

Every week I learn about four different inventions. This week I learned about the chimney, the wine press, ribbed vaults, and universities.

The Chimney

A chimney is a big brick vent that lets out gases from your house into the atmosphere. Peasants and farmers came to live with nobles in their manors from the 5th to 11th centuries due to the Little ice age. Before chimneys, people couldn’t work through the winter. It would be too cold for them to work outside. With the invention of the chimney it allowed people to cook inside and monks or scribes to work in the winter because it created heat through the home. Chimneys made it so the middle class people could build their own houses and led to the modern beautiful house designs we have today.

Universities

Universities are schools for higher education. Before universities they would have personal tutors or their parents. The fathers were responsible for their families which meant they were in-charge of educating their children. When universities came around the kids were out of their parents control. Since they were away from their parents and didn’t have any super vision they could do bad things such as commit crimes like murder. Back then you would get executed but since they were kids they would just get in a world of trouble. The universities are also known for creating great scholars that advanced knowledge we use today.

The Ribbed Vault

The ribbed vault is a really tall long building with high ceilings. These buildings were built to show glory to the church. In 1035 AD Abbot Suger created the Gothic style that spread all over Europe. Then in the 18th century after the Gothic style had died out it came back during the revolt of the classical Renaissance style. The classical style is seen in buildings today like the white house and many other federal buildings.

The Wine Press

The Wine Press is a device used to extract juice from crushed grapes. There are many different types of styles but the function is the same. The wine press is extremely old and almost as old as wine. Back then people didn’t know the overall effects of alcohol and they drank it from breakfast to dinner. The wine press is still used today but has had many improvements so now we have cleaner and longer lasting wine.

These inventions took a big roll in history and are all still used today.

A Good Friend

Some qualities that make a good friend are that they have to be nice and caring. For example, my friend Uma made me a necklace and a picture. Some other qualities are they should be supportive, funny and confident. I like to support and cheer on my friends in gymnastics whenever we are competing. Friends should stand up for each other and have each others backs, especially when they are being bullied. A good friend should make you feel comfortable just being yourself. I try to look for all these qualities in my friends and I try to have all these qualities.

Swans

Swans are related to ducks and geese. They are all in the same family, called Anatidae. There are three different types of swans in North America. The Tundra swan, The Mute swan, and The Trumpeter swan. The Trumpeter swan is the heaviest swan in North America. So if you live in North America try to look for these swans. It can’t be in fall or winter, it hast to be a warm season.

Geese

Geese migrate in both the fall and spring. When they do migrate, they travel in big packs. Some types of geese are Snow geese, Brent geese, Hawaiian geese, and Cackling geese. There are also many others. What I find funny about geese is that they have long necks, but short legs.

Babies are called Goslings

Mallard Ducks

Ducks are aquatic birds. Mallard ducks are wild ducks. Males are called drakes, females are called ducks. Females can lay 8-13 eggs. The babies can swim right after they hatch because they only spend one night in the nest. There is a hotel that has five mallard ducks in the lobby. The ducks get to live in luxury, they even have a luxury pen to stay in.

Muslim Scholars

I have learned about four different Muslim Scholars this Al-Kindi, Al-Razi, Al-Hazen, and Al-Khwarizmi.

Al-Kindi

Al-Kindi was born in 801 AD. He was a polymath, mathematician, physician, and musician. He went to Baghdad for a better education. He got a job at the House of Wisdom. He was one of the best Islamic philosophers of his time but sadly he died in 925 AD.

Al-Riza

Al-Riza was born in 854 AD. Al-Riza is also a name for several Iranian scholars. He is most famous for discovering smallpox. He died in 925 AD.

Al-Hazen

He was born in 965 AD. He was a scientist, philosophers astronomer and mathematician. Out of these four men he was the only inventor. He is most famous for inventing the pinhole camera. He passed away in 1040 AD.

Al-Khwarizmi

He was considered (the father of algebra). He was a mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, geographer. He had also worked in the house of wisdom. He was one of the first to write about algebra

These four scholars were all mathematicians and biologist following the rules of Plato and Aristole. They believed in the Earth and living things rather than physics. As you can see these men had a big impact on history. We would not have certain things today if they weren’t the thinkers they were.

Barn Owls

Barn owls are the most common owl in the world. Barn owls are masters of silent flight. When they fly it is so quiet you can hear crickets. Sometimes when they are looking for their prey they get mobbed by other animals so they prefer to hunt at night. When they do go hunting they have sharp talons to help them grab their prey faster.
